Background

Global surgery focuses on improving access to safe, affordable, and timely surgical care for people worldwide, especially in low-and middle-income countries. Over the past decade, innovations in this field have transformed how surgical services are delivered, trained, and managed.

In surgical care, innovations such as minimally invasive surgery, advanced imaging technologies, and robotic-assisted procedures (in high-income countries) have improved surgical precision, reduced complications, shortened hospital stays, and enhanced patient recovery. Portable and low-cost surgical equipment has also expanded access to essential surgery in underserved and rural areas.
