National Defence University-Kenyawas awarded a Charter on May 27, 2021, under the Universities Act, 2012 (Revised 2020). As the first specialized degree-awarding institution of its kind in Kenya, NDU-K aims to integrate theory and practice in defence and security education, while collaborating with similar institutions globally.
History & Background
The vision for NDU-K began in the 1970s, with the aim of advancing academic progression for General Service Officers (GSOs). It materialized in 1996 under the leadership of General (Rtd) Daudi Tonje. In 2015, the decision to establish NDU-K was revisited, leading to the charter in 2021. NDU-K has become a strategic vessel for the Ministry of Defence, enhancing training and fostering collaboration with security institutions worldwide.
Our Mission
At NDU-K, we are committed to advancing education and training in defence, security, and strategy to safeguard Kenya’s national interests in an increasingly competitive global arena. We aim to be a leader in providing specialized degrees that integrate practical and theoretical knowledge in security studies.
Our Vision
To be a focal point for shaping security and policy discourse within Kenya, the region, and the global stage. Through education, training, research, and innovation, NDU-K will foster the development of competent defence and security professionals who can address contemporary security challenges.
