









Makerere University, established in 1922 as a humble technical school in Uganda, has grown into one of Africa’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. Beginning as Uganda Technical College with 14 day students studying Carpentry, Building, and Mechanics, it evolved into a Center for Higher Education in East Africa by 1935, offering post-school certificate courses by 1937. Students engage in sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, handball, hockey, martial arts, netball, rugby, scrabble, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and woodball, managed by the Games Union.

The Main Library and seven specialized branches serve as a National Reference Library and legal depository for all works published in Uganda, housing Africana materials, manuscripts, photographic resources, and medical history archives. Sports Facilities include well-equipped fields, courts, and gear managed by the Games Union, supporting a wide range of sports and recreation.
The University Hospital provides curative and preventive services, including dental care, X-ray diagnostics, laboratory testing, maternal and child health, family planning, and drug dispensing, ensuring holistic support for students and staff.
