Uganda packs rainforest, savannah, and the source of the Nile into one compact, drivable country. It’s home to over half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, tracked on foot through the mist of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and to chimpanzee-filled Kibale Forest, the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, and white-water rapids on the Nile at Jinja. Few countries this size hold this much ecological range within a single day’s drive.

The gorilla trek is usually the anchor of a Uganda itinerary, and for good reason: an hour spent a few metres from a wild silverback is unlike anything else on a safari circuit. But the trek works best as the centrepiece of a longer route rather than the whole trip — a savannah stop in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls National Park adds tree-climbing lions, boat cruises thick with hippos, and the kind of wide-open game drive that Bwindi’s dense forest simply can’t offer.

Most Tuntu Uganda itineraries run 5–9 days and combine one primate-trekking permit with a savannah stop, occasionally adding a day of white-water rafting or a cultural visit to a Batwa community near the forest edge. It rewards travellers who don’t mind long drives on unpaved roads in exchange for genuinely low visitor density even at its best-known sites.
